Mount Cervati is the second highest mountain in Campania Region: at 1899 mt, it stands out in the Cilento National Park, representing a very great attraction for mountain and trekking lovers. Reaching its summit is an exciting, wonderful and accessible challenge for everyone that culminates with the view of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow.
There are three main ways to reach the summit starting from the municipality of Sanza, the first of which, and also the most convenient and easiest is entirely car accessible, along a 17 km-long unpaved road.
The route starts about 4 km from the centre of the town of Sanza, and immediately begins with an ascent on gravel terrain. The bare, rocky valley is gradually replaced by the dense vegetation of the forest, which accompanies one up to an altitude of 1350 metres. Here one reaches the Locality of Collata la Gorla and continues on the Chiaia Amara ridge.
The highlight of the route, of course, at 1852 m, is the Marian sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow, patron saint of the town of Sanza, located in its natural grotto and the origin of whose cult is lost in the mists of time. Behind it, the view extends over a wonderful meadow, commonly known as the Garden of the Virgin.
During the ascent, one can enjoy the experience of observing a truly complex ecosystem, which is not afraid to show visitors all its incredible variety. Not only the local vegetation, consisting mainly of beech, alder, maple and holly forests, but also a very varied fauna. It will be possible to see the wild cat, the wolf, but more easily frogs and spectacled salamanders. Also of great interest are the many species of birds of prey that have chosen Mount Cervati as their home, including the red kite, black kite, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and even the golden eagle.
