The Castle was built in the Norman era and is among the most important historical buildings in south of Italy. Having belonged to the princes of Sanseverino, it was the site of the historical Conspiracy of the Barons in 1485. After centuries of succession, in 1860 the structure was purchased by the Macchiaroli family, who still owns it today.
The oldest information on the Castle until 1862 is contained in a privilege dated 27 May 1405. With it, King Ladislaus of Durazzo granted the people of Diano - who had undertaken, in compliance with a royal order, the renovation of the castle with the construction of a large tower - a tax relief and excludes them from paying a financial contribution from the city and hamlets of Vallo di Diano based on the number of inhabitants. In that year the fiefdom of Diano belonged to the royal state property, having been confiscated by Ladislaus from the Sanseverino counts of Marsico, together with other cities and lands under their dominion, to punish them for having been his enemies.
Due to its powerful defenses, Antonello chose Castello Macchiaroli as the last bastion. In 1497, locked up in the castle, he supported the siege of King Frederick of Aragon, who came with his army to drive out the prince of Salerno, who had rebelled again. For about two months the fortress of Diano was impregnable, also thanks to the strenuous defense of the people of Diano. However, with the arrival of another military contingent under the command of Gonsalvo Fernandez de Cordoba, Antonello surrendered under honorable conditions. Thus ended the warlike period of Diano Castle. The last scion of the Sanseverino family, the restless Ferrante, was overwhelmed by the anti-baronial policy of the viceroy Don Pietro of Toledo, losing his fiefs and becoming extinct in 1552.
Today, after important restoration works which made it possible to restore its ancient walkways and relive the majesty of its towers, it has been enriched in furnishings and decorations with an elegant and refined style, making it a setting for weddings and parties.
